The need for evaluation and appropriate outcome measurement of part of clinical effectiveness will be addressed.
This module will consider all relevant aspects of cardiovascular and respiratory care from paediatrics across the life span to older people and will include:the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease, respiratory diseases and peripheral vascular disease. Aspects of evaluation in relation to pathophysiology, biopsychosocial issues and on-going management including long term conditions.
The resultant effects of medications and surgical management upon these conditions will be explored.
Integral to the pathophysiology and other management will be the physiotherapy management of patients with these conditions. The biopsychosocial factors in relation to patients and significant others will be discussed including the impact on the community.

Functional restoration through multiprofessional cardiovascular rehabilitation programmes will be developed. On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to: 1.
Synthesise knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics in relation to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Discuss and evaluate the course and prognosis of the compromised cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Explain the role of genetic and biopsychosocial factors together with other health determinants e. Relate the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunction to the underlying pathological changes. Demonstrate an understanding of relevant clinical outcome measures and how these may be used in clinical practice.

Engage in critical reflection on their clinical reasoning and learning Demonstrate the ability to document physiotherapy findings in an agreed format SOAP taking credence of professional and legal requirements. A variety of strategies will be used, with the emphasis on encouraging the students to take an active part in their knowledge and skill acquisition and to engage in critical reflection of their clinical reasoning and learning throughout the module.
The module will use lectures to introduce key areas of study related to cardiovascular and respiratory systems. These will be supported by follow up tutorial and seminar sessions for which students will be expected to have undertaken independent study in preparation for classes.

Tutorials and practical classes will be used to formulate physical examinations and assessment procedures and encourage student to discuss and explore relevant issues in relation to interventions. The use of case studies, patient interviews, visiting clinical specialists, videos and a reasoning and problem-solving approach will be incorporated into practical classes, giving the students a realistic approach to the management of clients of diverse ability and cultural backgrounds.
Peer review and tutor feedback will be used to provide formative assessment within the module. Directed reading and discussion groups in both the classes and the clinical setting will encourage students to enhance their understanding and provide experiential learning situations which will stimulate discussion and debate.
